Adventures abound in the NorthWest Territories!
I've successfully comlpeted riding one of the highways in the Territories - Territorial Highway #7 - The Liard Highway. According to some, this is one of the worst highways in the Territories, and I'm hoping that is the case. On Sunday I rode into the Hamlet of Fort Liard, which was totally cool, but a bugger to ride into on a Sunday evening, with the roads having been recently re-gravelled (lots of slipping), and everything except the gas station and one store being closed! And my first experience of bugs, NWT style.
Yesterday, I completed the highway, riding from Fort Liard to Checkpoint, at which point I got on Highway #1 and made my way to Fort Simpson. This stretch was mostly pavement with gravel sections, so a lot nicer on the riding.
Highlights from the journey so far to look forward to reading more about, and seeing pictures of in the future:
- The abandoned school bus on the Liard Highway
- Blackstone Territorial Park
- The artistry of the First Nations artisans in Fort Liard
- The stunning views of the Liard and MacKenzie rivers, and the distant mountains
- The surprise awaiting inside the "Sub Arctic Restraurant" in Fort Simpson
- and much, much more...
But, for now, all you get is this teaser/quick update.
